Andrea DeSantis '11

I found my voice and discovered my passion for education during my senior in the Honors College through the Literacy Outreach Initiative (now Honors Engaged). During the year, I had the opportunity to visit local elementary schools and engage with students exposing them to my love of literacy and introducing them to the idea of attending college. I quickly recognized the grave disparities in educational opportunities and realized there was a lot more work to be done.

I changed my plans from embarking on a career in science to one of service and education. I served as an AmeriCorps VISTA member at the Honors College where I developed partnerships with local non-profits and school so that other Honors College students could have the opportunity to engage with the community starting in their first year.

My two years as VISTA taught me the importance of  following your passions and the importance of sharing your voice with your community.
